Simple, portable wireless containment — no wire, no digging, ready in under two hours

The PetSafe Free to Roam is the straightforward wireless fence. Plug the transmitter into any standard outlet, set the boundary radius, put the collar on your dog, and you’re done. No wire to bury, no installation tools, no contractor. The system covers a circular area up to 1/2 acre — 90 feet in every direction from the transmitter — and because it’s entirely self-contained, you can pack it up and use it anywhere you have an outlet.

This is the right choice if you want a simpler, lower-cost wireless fence and don’t need the larger coverage area or rechargeable collar of the Stay & Play. The Free to Roam uses a replaceable RFA-67D-11 battery in the collar rather than a rechargeable battery — easier to manage for some owners, slightly higher ongoing cost than rechargeable but never waiting on a charge.

How it works

The transmitter sits indoors — in a garage, on a shelf, near a window — and broadcasts a radio signal outward in a sphere. The boundary is always circular; the radius is adjustable so you can make the containment area as small or as large as your yard allows, up to the 90-foot maximum. The receiver collar your dog wears detects that signal continuously. When he approaches the edge, he hears a warning tone. If he keeps going, the collar delivers a static correction. The boundary zone is approximately 2–3 feet wide, giving your dog a clear warning before the correction zone begins.

Because the signal transmits through walls, floors, and most household obstructions, the transmitter placement is flexible. Hills, dense tree cover, metal structures, or stucco can affect signal consistency — for yards with these features, an underground fence will be more reliable. For flat, open yards, the Free to Roam works well.

The receiver collar

The collar is waterproof, ergonomically designed for comfort, and fits dogs 5 lbs and up with neck sizes from 6 to 28 inches — one of the wider fit ranges of any wireless fence collar, making it usable on very small dogs and large breeds alike. Five levels of adjustable static correction plus a tone-only mode let you find the right setting for your dog’s temperament. An automatic safety shutoff cuts the correction after a set period if your dog gets trapped near the boundary. A low battery indicator on the collar lets you know when the RFA-67D-11 battery needs replacing — expect roughly 1–2 months of battery life depending on how often the collar activates.

The collar is compatible with other PetSafe wireless fence receiver collars including the original PIF-300 system, so if you’re adding a dog to an existing PetSafe setup, additional collars will work across systems.

Portability

The transmitter is compact and mounts on a wall bracket (included) or sits on any flat surface. Because the system has no buried wire, it’s genuinely portable — pack it for an RV trip, a cabin rental, a stay at a family member’s house, or any situation where you need temporary containment. Just plug in, reset the boundary flags, and your dog is contained. Note that metal structures or vehicle interiors can reduce the maximum Pet Area size when using the system portably.
