Upland beeper collars — locate your dog in heavy cover without breaking stride
When your pointer or flusher disappears into a cattail marsh, a thick fencerow, or a standing cornfield, a beeper collar tells you exactly what’s happening without you having to push through the cover to find out. The beeper on the collar emits a tone while your dog is running, then changes pattern — or goes silent — when your dog locks up on point. That audio cue tells you to stop walking, get your gun up, and approach the point from the right angle. Without it, you’re hunting blind.
Every collar on this page combines a remote trainer and a beeper in a single unit. You get e-collar control for steadiness and obedience work, plus the audible locator you need for hunting in real-world cover — without wearing two collars or carrying two remotes.
Run mode vs. Point mode — what they mean in the field
Every beeper collar on this page operates in at least two modes, and understanding them is essential before you buy.
Run mode (also called Locate mode) produces a steady beep while your dog is moving. It tells you where your dog is and gives you a general sense of direction so you can track them through cover. The beep rate typically changes with movement — faster when the dog is covering ground, slower when they’re working a scent. This is what keeps you oriented when the dog is out of sight.
Point mode (also called Point Only mode) beeps only when the dog is stationary on point. The collar is silent while the dog is running, then activates when the dog locks up. This is the preferred mode for many hunters — it eliminates the constant background noise of run mode and delivers a clear, unambiguous signal when something important is happening.
Run & Point mode combines both — beeping on the run, then changing to a distinct point signal when the dog stops. All six collars on this page include this mode.
Choosing the right system
The main decision is whether you want a dedicated upland system or a system that does double duty for other hunting applications.
The SportDOG Upland Hunter 1875 is the most complete upland system on this page — 1 mile range, expandable to 3 dogs, and a full set of beeper modes including Jump stimulation for breaking point. It’s our recommended choice for serious pheasant, quail, and grouse hunters. The DT Systems R.A.P.T. 1450 takes a different approach — the handheld straps to the back of your hand so you can give commands with a gun in your hands without fumbling for a remote in your vest.
For two-dog upland hunters who want the most intuitive control, the Dogtra T&B Dual Dial puts a separate pre-set dial for each dog on top of the remote — no menus, no scrolling, just two dials you can adjust without taking your eyes off the field. For the longest range available, the DT Systems SPT 2430 covers 3 miles and is built for professional handlers and handlers who run big-running pointing dogs.

Common questions about upland beeper collars
How far can I hear the beeper?
Most beepers on this page are audible at 300–450 yards under good conditions — open fields with moderate wind. In dense cover, wind, or rolling terrain, effective range drops. The DT Systems SPT 2430 rates its beeper at 450 yards. If you regularly hunt big-running dogs in open country, look for systems with higher-rated beeper volume. In tight cover with close-working dogs, beeper range is rarely a limiting factor.
Can I run the beeper and the training collar at the same time?
Yes — that’s the point of combination systems. The beeper and e-collar functions operate independently from the same remote. You can have the beeper running in point mode while keeping full e-collar control for steadiness corrections or handling cues.
Will the beeper spook birds?
It can, particularly in quiet conditions at close range. Most experienced hunters switch to Point Only mode once a dog is trained, which keeps the collar silent on the run and only activates on point — when the birds are already pinned anyway. Run mode is more useful during training and in conditions where you need to track the dog constantly.
