Great Buy!By:
I am a first time lab owner. After comparing this against many other brands and then against other models within SportDOG i felt this the Wetland425 was the way to go. I have not been let down. I got one when my pup was about 6 months old to gain his attention when he would ignore me in a training session. I haven't had to go over the 3 setting and I haven't had to use it much since. ()
Best Choice We've MadeBy:
Our German shepherd had the basic fundamentals down for basic obedience, and this collar gave us an extension to his leash making him that much greater. We love our SportDog collar, and wouldn't go with any other brand in the future! ()
Worked with very little previous experience!By:
I originally intended on avoiding shock collars as a training platform for my Golden Retriever, Trigger. I had the same concerns many dog lovers/owners have about the trauma their dog might experience. I thought using all positive reinforcement would be the most effective approach to basic training as well as field/gun-dog training. Boy was I wrong! I'll note that the only experience I've had before this with collars was boundary collars or underground fences with previous dogs. Trigger, my 5 month old retriever unfortunately began to become very stubborn. If there was no reward or treat involved then training or compliance was not going to happen. Even though he knew I was the alpha he was still becoming increasingly defiant. Some might say spoiled. He started out great. He'd fetch/retrieve, sit, stay, and come back to me when I ordered. Something changed though. He began to run when he was called, only sit for a treat, and he'd begin to retrieve but show little interest in completing the task despite my joyful pleas. He'd also take off chasing any small animal he thought he could tackle without hesitation or regard for my commands. Our poor cat Milly had it rough for a while. This was most concerning to me because he'd go on a chase, and not stop until he was ready. Living just outside of the city this put his life in danger for obvious reasons. So, after some research I ordered the collar. The first day I attempted to use it combined with basic on leash training using commands that he already knew. The provided CD explains how this should be done. I was ready to give positive reinforcement immediately after the use of the collar if need be. The first few attempts were successful. Then he began trying to tough through it. With his ears twitching he'd power through the shock, and completely ignoring the tone/vibration mode. So I turned up the juice one notch (now to #2). Keep in mind I turned this all the way up, and hand tested this before using it on my dog. I'm sure that's not recommended, but I wasn't going to use it on him if I wasn't willing to test it on myself first. It's definitely an attention getter, but nothing I wasn't comfortable using on him. #1 was so faint I could barely feel it. A slight tingle at best. #1 is where I started, and #2 is as high as I've ever needed to go. Moving up to #2... He yelped, and wanted to get in the house some kind of bad. After calming him down we took a break, and I considered putting the collar up until he was a little older. He seemed a little rattled, but shortly after I noticed a huge improvement. I decided to slow things down a little more, and give it another try. Within 20-30 minutes he was reacting to the sound tone alone. I haven't had to use the shock button once since this. I've seen him chasing the cat in a full sprint and stop at my command; turning back to return to me when using the "COME" command and tone alone. He fetches happily, and obediently now. Sits, and stays nicely. He even gets in his kennel without hesitation on command. Which is something he didn't do before. He does at times give me that old look, but using the collars tone/vibration mode quickly reminds him it doesn't pay to be stubborn. He's very much a different dog in the best way possible! He doesn't act traumatized or any of the other ideas that pass through dog owners minds when considering using this training tool. If anything it's improved his life drastically, kept him out of trouble, and most importantly put him back on track to be the best dog he can be. He's a better all around dog than ever. Did I mention I haven't been frustrated once since using this collar? I'm very greatful I took the chance. I'm sure Trigger would say the same. Training has become a pleasure once again. He's becoming a very proud dog, and I'm a very proud owner!
Thanks for the ease of use,
Jeremy
