A check cord isn’t optional when you’re building steadiness in a young dog. It’s what lets you enforce a stop or a recall from a distance before the dog earns off-lead range. This 30-foot orange cord is soft on the hands, lightweight enough that a dog barely feels it dragging, and bright enough to stay visible in grass and cover. It coils cleanly without tangling, which matters when you’re managing a green dog and don’t have time to sort out a knot.

Thirty feet is the right length for most early steadiness work — enough range to let the dog find birds and flash point before you step in, short enough to get there in time to matter. When the dog is solid on whoa and coming reliably to the whistle, the cord comes off. Until then, it stays on.
