The Garmin PRO 70 — Tri-Tronics reliability in its most direct form

The PRO 70 is what you reach for when you want the Tri-Tronics tube-style interface without complexity. It’s the direct descendant of the Classic 70 — the collar that professional trainers and serious amateurs ran for years — updated with modern battery technology, a built-in BarkLimiter, remote LED beacon lights, and the ability to expand to six dogs. The feature set is deliberately streamlined: six stimulation levels, tone, and one-handed operation designed so you never take your eyes off your dogs. If you grew up on Tri-Tronics and know what you need, the PRO 70 delivers it without asking you to navigate menus or manage a touchscreen.

Classic, rugged design built for one-handed control

The PRO 70 uses the same tube-shaped handheld that trainers have relied on for decades. The stimulation level and tone selection dial sits at the top of the unit where your thumb finds it naturally — you can adjust level and send a correction without shifting your grip or looking at the remote. The color-coded multi-dog toggle switch and buttons run down the face of the unit in a line, so switching between dogs is a single finger movement. A fixed 2.5-inch transmitter antenna eliminates the risk of a broken or lost antenna while delivering 1-mile range in field conditions.

Six stimulation levels cover the working range for most dogs, with top-end output increased from earlier generations for better effectiveness when it’s needed. Tone is accessible from the same top-mounted dial — the “T” position on the dial activates the non-stimulating tone, and the “L” position remotely operates the LED beacon lights on the dog device. The PRO 70 expands to six dogs via additional PT 10 collars — more multi-dog capacity than any other collar on this page. Toggle between dogs 1–3 and 4–6 with the switch on the face of the unit. Color-coded buttons and collar straps keep track of which dog is which during a session without any mental accounting.

BarkLimiter, beacon lights, and long battery life

The built-in BarkLimiter activates on the dog device and uses AutoRise technology — it automatically finds and applies the correction level needed to interrupt barking without requiring manual adjustment per dog. It’s useful for kennels and holding situations where you want to manage noise between sessions without active intervention. To activate it, hold the collar’s power button until the LED turns blue. To return to training mode, cycle power normally.

LED beacon lights built into each PT 10 receiver are remote-operated from the handheld via the “L” dial position. In pre-dawn setups, late evening sessions, or any low-visibility situation, you can locate each dog by the light on its collar without needing a separate light or calling the dog in. Beacon lights are visible up to 100 yards. The handheld is rated IPX7 waterproof and floats. The dog device is rated to 1 ATM. Both run rechargeable lithium-ion batteries — approximately 80 hours on the handheld and 60 hours on the dog device — long enough for extended training strings without needing to charge between sessions. A battery life indicator on both units tells you when it’s time to recharge.

Collar pairing and multi-dog management

The PRO 70 color-codes its entire multi-dog system: each of the three transmitter buttons corresponds to a collar strap color, and additional PT 10 collars come in matching colors. When you’re running six dogs, the color connection between the button you’re pressing and the dog receiving the correction becomes the system — there’s no display to consult and no menu to navigate. That simplicity is exactly what makes this collar the default choice for trainers who run large strings and need to move fast. Replacement collar straps are sold separately in ¾” polyurethane-coated nylon.

PRO 70 vs. PRO 550: The PRO 70 gives you 6 stimulation levels and up to 6 dogs. The PRO 550 steps up to 21 levels (7 positions × Low/Med/High), adds vibration, and accepts the Garmin Upland Beeper accessory — but caps at 3 dogs. If you run more than 3 dogs or want the simplest possible PRO-series interface, the PRO 70 is the right call. If you need finer stimulation control, vibration, or beeper compatibility, the 550 is the upgrade.
