The single most important thing you can do with a young retriever is make retrieving easy and fun. A dummy that’s too big, too heavy, or too hard to carry is a fast way to create a reluctant dog. This puppy canvas dummy gets the size right — at 2¼" x 8¼", it’s noticeably smaller and lighter than a standard training bumper, sized to fit comfortably in a puppy’s mouth without requiring a struggle to pick up or carry. Most young dogs take to it immediately, which is exactly the point.

Canvas is the right material for early training for a second reason: it holds scent. Where plastic dummies are essentially scent-neutral, canvas absorbs and retains game scent — pheasant, duck, or rabbit — making it a natural bridge between a retrieve dummy and a real bird. A young dog conditioned on a scented canvas dummy develops a stronger scenting instinct and makes an easier transition to live or frozen game. The canvas construction is also softer in the mouth than plastic, encouraging a gentle hold from the very first retrieve.

Built to last, not just to start

Despite being a puppy dummy, this isn’t a throwaway training aid. The canvas covers closed-cell foam that holds its shape through years of use, sewn with Dacron thread that doesn’t break down with repeated water exposure. The weighted construction throws cleanly and consistently — no awkward tumbling that makes it hard for a young dog to mark. A poly rope is sewn directly into the dummy, so you get a good throwing grip without a separate attachment that can fail over time.

Tip: Adding duck scent or pheasant scent to this dummy significantly increases a young dog’s interest and helps build the scent-to-retrieve connection early. Apply a small amount before each session and let it air out between uses.
