A simple and cost-effective alternative to a traditional fence

Keeping your dog safe at home is a must for every dog owner. Whether your dog hunts, trials, or is a full-time companion, the SportDOG In-Ground Fence System gives him the freedom to run and play — just only so far. It provides that safety for thousands less than conventional fencing, and it’s built to the same standards as SportDOG’s field training collars.

Installation is straightforward: bury the boundary wire around your yard, plug in the transmitter, and charge the collar. The transmitter sends a radio signal through the wire creating the boundary. Your dog wears the DryTek receiver collar, which detects that signal as he approaches the perimeter. He first hears a warning tone and feels a vibration — if he keeps going, he receives a static correction that reminds him to turn back. With a little consistent training using the included flags as a visual guide, most dogs learn their boundaries quickly and reliably.

Coverage and capacity

The kit includes 1,000 feet of boundary wire and 100 flags, enough to contain an area up to 1 1/3 acres right out of the box. The transmitter is powerful enough to push a signal through up to 8,600 feet of wire, covering up to 100 acres with the purchase of additional wire and flags. For large properties — rural acreage, farms, hunting land — very few systems come close to this range at anywhere near this price.

The system expands to unlimited dogs with the purchase of additional SDF-CR Add-A-Dog collar receivers. Each collar can be set independently, so dogs with different temperaments can run on the same transmitter at their own correction level. A wire-break alarm on the transmitter alerts you if the boundary wire is ever cut or damaged, so you’ll know immediately if containment is compromised.

The SDF-CR collar receiver

The SDF-100C uses a smaller, sleeker collar than the original SDF-100A — lighter and more comfortable while still built for sporting breeds. The Li-Ion rechargeable battery charges in two hours via USB-C and lasts one to two months on a charge, which means you’re not swapping batteries every few weeks. The collar is waterproof and submersible to 25 feet using SportDOG’s DryTek technology, so dogs that swim, hunt in water, or live in wet climates are fully covered.

The collar offers seven levels of adjustable static stimulation plus vibration and tone, giving you precise control over correction intensity for any dog’s temperament. The Anti-Linger feature automatically delivers a correction if your dog lingers in the warning zone too long, preventing him from running down the battery by testing the boundary repeatedly. The boundary width is adjustable via a range knob on the transmitter — set the warning and stimulation zones to anywhere from 8 to 12 feet on each side of the wire depending on your dog’s speed and temperament.

Why SportDOG over PetSafe for this application

SportDOG’s in-ground fence is the better choice for active, athletic, or hunting breeds. The rechargeable Li-Ion collar means no battery management on working dogs, the DryTek waterproofing handles real field conditions, and the 100-acre capacity covers large rural properties that PetSafe’s systems can’t match. If you have a suburban yard and want the simplest possible setup, PetSafe’s systems are fine. If your dog works, hunts, or lives on larger property — SportDOG is the right call.
