The H2O 1820 PLUS CoverUp is where DT Systems’ H2O platform makes the most sense for a waterfowl hunter. The collar and transmitter are finished in the Long Leaf Fatal Flight camo pattern, both units are fully waterproof, and the transmitter floats. The 1820 adds what the H2O 1850 PLUS doesn’t have: vibration. Vibration-only mode gives you a non-stimulating communication option — useful for a dog that knows the command and just needs a reminder, or for introducing a young dog to collar communication before adding static. Vib+Stim fires vibration and stimulation simultaneously, which some trainers use as an attention-getting combination in high-distraction environments. Both work when the collar is submerged, which matters for a dog that swims to a retrieve and needs a cue before it surfaces.

What DT Systems’ vibration does that an audible tone doesn’t

DT Systems builds vibration into the 1820 rather than an audible tone for a practical reason: vibration is dog-specific. A tone from one collar can be heard by another dog nearby, which creates confusion in a multi-dog setup. Vibration only the wearing dog can feel — it works when the collar is underwater, it works when your dog’s ears are wind-filled and running hard, and it keeps working as the dog ages and loses some hearing. The 16 stimulation levels run DT Systems’ Gentle Touch™ system starting at a calibrated low end — useful for sensitive breeds or younger dogs where the lowest standard level would be too sharp a starting point. Nick and Continuous modes are standard alongside the vibration options.

The MAXX-Range antenna is woven into the full length of the collar belt rather than housed only in the receiver body, which gives the system more consistent FM signal reception across terrain where a standard internal antenna would drop off. The transmitter has a no-slip soft-grip rubber coating and floats. A built-in safety shut-off prevents continuous stimulation beyond a set duration. The collar adjusts to fit necks 12”–23” and runs rechargeable NiMH batteries in both units. The system expands to 3 dogs with H2O CoverUp Add-On Collars. H2O 1820 PLUS vs. H2O 1850 PLUS: The H2O 1850 PLUS adds a built-in beeper/locator with Locate, Run & Point, and Point Only modes audible to 450 yards — the right system if you run pointing dogs and want locate capability. The 1820 has no beeper but adds vibration modes the 1850 doesn’t have. If you run retrievers and want vibration, the 1820 is the right call. If you run pointing dogs and want a beeper, go to the 1850.
