Four dummies, three colors — everything you need to start training

Most training sessions benefit from having multiple dummies on hand — enough to throw a double, reset without chasing down your last throw, or run a young dog through a series of marks without stopping. This assorted 4-pack gives you two black-and-white dummies, one orange, and one white: the three standard training colors in a single order at a better price than buying individually.

Having all three colors matters more than it might seem. Different training environments call for different dummies — orange stands out in tall grass and upland cover, white shows up well on open water and against bare ground, and black-and-white provides maximum contrast in almost any setting. Mixing colors in a session also prevents a dog from becoming color-dependent, where he marks and hunts based on a specific dummy color rather than the actual fall. Rotating colors builds a more reliable marker.

These are SportDOG’s standard regular-size dummies — 2" in diameter and 12" long, the classic bumper size that’s been the baseline for retriever training for decades. The soft plastic vinyl construction is tough enough to take thousands of throws and retrieves without cracking or splitting, but pliable enough in cold weather that it won’t become hard and uncomfortable for your dog to carry. The knobby texture gives your dog a firm, natural grip and is specifically designed to discourage hard mouth — the textured surface encourages a gentle hold rather than a crushing bite.

The air valve on each dummy lets you adjust buoyancy independently. Fully inflated, a dummy rides high on the water — easy for young dogs to spot and pick up. Let some air out and it rides lower, partially submerged, for a more advanced water marking challenge.
